A Comment/Review on ellaenchanting’s “Confidence”

It’s been a while since I’ve made one of these and while I can’t say for certain I’ll start commenting/reviewing more often again, I want to do this one at least. As the title of the post says, today I’ll be talking about ellaenchanting’s Confidence. Synopsis below:

Richard goes to therapy.

Wow, talk about brevity! Normally, I would stay clear of such a short description, but I decided to go for it anyway for two reasons. The first was because I read and commented on another of her pieces a while back, namely Creative Writing, and liked it a lot. The second stemmed from the fact that I’ve been creating a lot of gentle femdom content in the last couple of days and I was curious to know if the story in question revolved around it or would feature an evil/unethical therapist. Well, after going through it, I can say Dr. Eleanor seems like one of the good ones, so let’s talk about the tale.

This is a very straightforward piece, clocking at a little more than 1700 words. The main character – Richard – is a man who lost his way after a messy break-up and that goes looking for help after a friend’s recommendation. Dr. Eleanor is quite skilled in dealing with cases like his, so she gently hypnotizes him into feeling more confident about himself when he’s being guided by women in his life, and that’s it. As I said, pretty simple, and yes, this definitely falls into gentle femdom territory.

I enjoyed the story, however, I felt everything moved along too quickly and that there was a lot of “tell” early on as opposed to “show”. When Richard enters Dr. Eleanor’s office and they start to talk, the text reads something like this: they talked about this, she asked the following questions, he found them odd, etc, without the actual dialogue being there, and that was a bit jarring. We get dialogue eventually but it’s used quite sparingly throughout the tale, and I didn’t feel as connected to the characters as I hoped to because of this stylistic choice. Having most of the actual dialogue take place in real-time instead of being narrated would have solidified the personalities of the characters involved a lot more. 

Anyway, that didn’t stop me from liking the overall plot, but my appreciation would have been higher with a little more detail in bringing both Dr. Eleanor and Richard to life the way I mentioned.
