Erica didn’t like Christmas. There was no particular reason for it – at least none she remembered, but she had always frowned upon the season and the commercialism attached to it. She wasn’t too fond of gifts either though she gave more than she received.

Following the last day of the season, she was cleaning up the handful of decorations she had put up just so her friends wouldn’t say anything when she noticed something that had fallen behind the tree. It was a small box wrapped in golden paper with a striking red ribbon and the initials A. F. were written on the note that accompanied it.

A. F. stood for Alice Franks, a friend, confident, and all-around eccentric person. Talking was her favorite pastime, and she never ran out of words. Deep down, Erica had always suspected she had a secret reserved for a few special few, and her suspicions were about to be proven true.

The note read: Merry Christmas. I offer you a ticket to a world of wonder. If you’re willing to find out what I mean, wear it. It will show you the way.

Somewhat surprised and yet intrigued, Erica unwrapped the present to discover a ring inside the box – but not just any ring. It was a delicate band of silver, intricately woven like the branches of an ancient tree, with tiny emeralds embedded at intervals that glimmered like dew-kissed leaves in the morning light. She remembered seeing Alice wear the same design before, and now that she thought about it, so did other companions of her like Trudy and Maeve. What was it and what did Alice mean by “a ticket to a world of wonder”?

With a hesitant breath, she slipped the ring onto her finger and gasped. The walls of her modest apartment shimmered as the silver wrapped around her and she saw what looked like a winding luminescent path leading out of it.

“What the…?” she said, unable to process her thoughts. She removed the ring and the twinkling lights disappeared, but as she put it on again, they returned, brighter than ever, pointing her in the direction she was supposed to go.

“Well, this is new!” she muttered, her feet moving on their own to find out what hid behind mundanity.

Excited and yet somewhat fearful, Erica followed the path that glowed beneath her feet. Each step she took caused the silver ring to pulse in sync with her breathing. The familiar confines of her apartment melted away, replaced by the city’s streets, now bathed in soft hues of green.

She walked silently through this ethereal-like haze, noticing nothing except the enchanting lights. They led her to Alice’s house, which looked the same as the last time she had been there, except for one thing.

A barrier surrounded it like a magical cobweb only she could see. The brick facade reflected its soft, iridescent glow, inviting her to touch it and complete her journey. Her heart quickened, and she accepted the call.

As her fingers grazed the tiny strings of magic before her, the world changed again, opening up to a vast room where Alice and a handful of other women stood waiting. They wore green robes and silver belts embellished with the same pattern engraved on their rings. The space they were in almost didn’t seem real, rippling around them and allowing glimpses into fantastical dimensions mortals weren’t supposed to gaze upon.

Someone else was with them – a man with vacant eyes, sporting the black and white uniform of a known pizza place. The delivery man kneeled before them, unaware of how long he had been there, and if he would ever be allowed to leave. Erica bit her lip and stepped forward, leaving everything she knew behind.

“Welcome, Erica!” Alice declared, moving in for a hug. “I see you found your present. We’ve been waiting for you.”

“Who’s we?” she asked. Besides Alice, Erica only recognized Trudy and Maeve with the other three women being strangers.

“Sisters with a cause, wielding power beyond our wildest dreams. This is where we gather and enjoy everything we deserve.”

“And him?” Erica pointed at the kneeling man who remained as still as a statue in mindless adoration.

“An occasional plaything, something to take the edge off when we’re feeling horny. Don’t worry about him, he’s of no consequence – it’s all about you tonight, honey.”

“Excuse me?” Erica said in disbelief.

“Yes, you. We’ve been missing a Sister for a while now. I’ve searched for a replacement far and wide, but none showed more promise than you. Look at how the ring glows in your hand – it’s like you two were made for each other and I believe that. I want you to join us and become a part of our magic family.”

“What? This is insane!”

“Only if you believe it to be. Admit you’re curious. You’ve got a taste of something you never knew existed and now you want more, don’t you? It’s okay, we’ve all been there and made the right choice. I’m sure you will too.”

Erica felt the weight of Alice’s gaze upon her, a blend of expectation and something akin to reverence. The ring on her finger throbbed as if urging her to respond. She opened her mouth to voice the turmoil twisting in her chest but found only acceptance, a desire to sink deeper into this fantastic new reality. She looked at the helpless man again and something wicked sprung inside her. Smirking, she asked,

“You said plaything… Does that mean he’s your slave or something?”

“While he’s under our spell, yes… and that’s only one thing we can do…” Maeve chimed in. “If you want to know everything there is to know, join the circle. That’s why you were invited.”

The other women nodded, sensing her inner energy and how it matched theirs. A decision had already been made and the group was whole again.

The ring continued to pulse on Erica’s finger as she thought about everything she could do with its power. What a lovely and unexpected present! She could end up liking Christmas after all.
