What’s Wrong with Women?

Cameron turned off the TV, disgusted.
“Damn it, they did it again!”
“Did what?” Lucy asked.
“Gender-swapped another character I liked. Now, all my male role models are women!”
“What’s wrong with women?”
“Nothing. I love them but…”
“Hold that thought.”
Lucy waved a pendant before his eyes. Five minutes later, Camilla left the room.

Another impromptu. I spent most of the day so far recovering from a long week and a long month by promoting some of my work instead of creating new stuff. Of all the ideas that came to mind, this was the one I enjoyed the most so here it is. Be careful what you say around women who also happen to be hypnotists.

All Work…

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy…” Cassie whispered.
“All play and no work makes Jack a mere toy,” He retorted.
“So? You’ve been my toy since forever….”
“I don’t remember that.”
“Do you remember not being mine?”
“No.”
“Good,” She cradled him in her arms, sending him deep into trance again.

Many of you probably know this proverb from Stanley Kubrick’s movie adaptation of The Shining, as it’s the sentence Jack Nicholson’s character types over and over again while The Overlook Hotel slowly messes with his mind. The scene where this is revealed is pretty iconic and so is the whole movie even if Stephen King disliked the adaptation. As much as I love the movie, I definitely prefer the book.

Anyhow, what you probably don’t know is that this proverb appeared in other literary works and even had a continuation of sorts. I used it in the piece above. The second line came from the mind of 19th-century Irish novelist Maria Edgeworth and was included in the book entitled Harry and Lucy Concluded.

Since one of the things I like doing in this challenge is subverting quotes, I decided to do it again today and this came out.

Favorite Sport

“Alexandra?”
“Yes, General?”
“I don’t remember giving you permission to attend the Olympics.”
“Why would you?”
“Right… what are you doing there?”
“Watching one of my favorite sports live.”
“What sport?”
“Naked men’s 4×400 meters relay.”
“Since when is that an Olympic discipline?”
“Since I arrived here, of course.”
The General sighed and hung up.

Have you been keeping up with the Olympics this year? I haven’t. Apart from the occasional news bulletins or the special announcements when my country wins a medal (we’ve only got three so far, two Bronze and one Silver), I know next to nothing about what’s going on in Tokyo apart from the fact there’s no audience for this event. Nonetheless, this is such a massive event that I had to write something about it.

I also came to realize today that Alexandra hadn’t been around in one of these since late March so I figured it was time to change that. When the two ideas came together in my head, I started wondering what sort of event she would be into and this little bit of silliness came to be. Let’s hope the athletes always go for the relay and not some other dangling thing if you know what I mean.

Slave Mason

The ceremony was almost complete, or so young George Washington thought. As he was about to receive his title, a woman appeared in a flash of light.
“What’s the meaning of this?” He asked.
“Master doesn’t suit you. You need a Mistress.” The time-traveling hypnotist replied.
His knees agreed and the Slave Masons were born.

Yesterday, we had Alexandra again doing what she does best and when she usually appears, Horatia isn’t far behind. As I usually do when it comes to the time-traveling hypnotist’s pieces, I looked for a historical event I could twist into something funny and got this:

On August 4th, 1753, George Washington, a young Virginia planter, became a Master Mason, the highest basic rank in the secret fraternity of Freemasonry. The ceremony was held at the Masonic Lodge No. 4 in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Washington was 21 years old and would soon command his first military operation as a major in the Virginia colonial militia. Looking at his title made me think a Mistress Mason would be so much better and that’s what I went for. I wouldn’t be surprised if, after creating the Slave Masons, Horatia helmed the creation of the United States of Servitude as well.
