Bonus Story – All the Selves We Leave Behind

Bonus Stories are special features posted at the end of each month (depending on total pledges) and available to all patrons from the get-go. Bonus Stories are exclusive to my Patreon for the time being. While I may decide to release them publicly in the future, as I do with the regular Saturday Stories, for now, this is how things go.

As she debated whether to stay or go, a familiar figure pushed through the throng with tousled hair and searching eyes. Jonas’s gaze landed on Vanessa, and a smile spread across his face, lighting up his features like the sun breaking through the stormy clouds. He approached her with a confident stride, his tall frame cutting through the chaotic scene around them with ease.
The therapist/hypnotist smiled back at him, noticing how much he had changed in the twelve years since they had last seen each other. His once-boyish charm had matured into a rugged handsomeness, his jawline sharp beneath a day’s worth of stubble. His piercing green eyes were also sharper than ever but there was a hint of sadness hiding behind them. Something was bothering him, and she suspected it wouldn’t take long to find out what it was.
As he drew closer, she caught the scent of his cologne – a subtle mix of cedarwood and bergamot that stirred memories long buried within her heart. Images of their brief romance flooded back to her in vivid detail.
She remembered the day her brother Nick introduced him at a birthday party. The connection was almost instantaneous, which surprised them both. She also remembered the way he used to make her laugh, the late-night conversations they shared, and the warmth of his embrace that felt like home. For various reasons, things hadn’t worked out in the end, but the main one boiled down to the idea of commitment. He wanted something more and she wasn’t ready for it. Although the separation was amicable, some lingering regrets remained, and their friendship suffered. She didn’t remember when they started to drift apart and wasn’t sure she wanted to.
