Bonus Story – Assimilation

Janice wiped the sweat off her forehead and smiled from cheek to cheek when she reached the majestic subterranean gallery listed on her map and saw the phosphorescent lights adorning the stalactites above her head. She had done it! On the week before her twenty-seventh birthday, she had conquered the belly of the beast.
It was the first time she had embarked on such an enterprise, and the rush running through her mind told her it was unlikely to be the last. Despite being statistically too young to be going through a mid-life crisis, she had sought something different to feel alive for more days than she could number, and now she had found it, two hundred meters below ground.
Family, close friends, and even her co-workers – in a nutshell, everyone! – had told her she shouldn’t go spelunking on her own, and that it was best to remain a spineless librarian with no real sense of adventure than to risk certain death inside an underground palace of horrors. However, she was known for being stubborn and feeling the more empowered the fewer people believed in her.
