A Comment/Review on NeonBlack’s “I Know You”

This is Neon Black’s first upload to the EMCSA. The synopsis for I Know You goes as follows:

Your subconscious mind takes you to a strange fun fair where things happen that you fear and desire at the same time.

When I read this synopsis, I immediately thought to myself it would be a second person/induction like tale with no real characters whatsoever other than a back and forth between writer and reader or simply a monologue that would spun into a fantasy. I was only half-right because there are indeed characters, and dialogue and kinky mind control scenes that work for the most part though perhaps would have been better served without the second-person narration.

The author claims that English isn’t his native language and that some mistakes may appear here and there but, other than one or two noticeable typos or misused words, the concept flows nicely and, if it weren’t for the caveat, I wouldn’t have thought for a second I was in the presence of a non-native English speaker so… bonus points for that.

I liked the writing style overall with a few genuinely funny one-liners and descriptions. Not all of the fantasy bits resonated with me and I felt the ending was quite abrupt considering the preceding sections. The hypnotist in the tale is a bit of a bitch so if you’re into that, you’ll love her, I’m sure. As I mentioned before, my tastes in that regard vary. It depends on both my mood, how the character is portrayed, the whole story atmosphere, and things like that In this piece, I didn’t feel much of a connection with the characters and the situations evoked  because it’s all meant to be a subconscious fantasy through and through. It’s still a good tale though and if both second person narration and exbitionism/humiliation sequences rock your boat, you should definitely check it out.
