Haunted Melody

Charles stared ominously at the music box. It was said that whoever listened to its melody would lose his will in three days, doomed to serve the Lady of the Shadows forever.
One hour remained on the clock yet his soul was already in disarray. Could the legends be true?
Darkness crept under his desk…

This piece was inspired by a game. Which one, you ask? it’s entitled Song of Horror, an old-school 3rd person survival horror game with permadeath included. It was first released for PC in episodic format about two years ago and then got a console release a few months later. It was on my radar for a while because of its premise – a music box whose melody draws an unstoppable Eldritch Presence to the world. Anyone who listens to it is eventually consumed by it, etc. I never got to play it mainly because of lack of time, but also because I eventually came to think it would probably be too much for me. As mentioned before, I love reading horror stories, but not necessarily watching movies and I’ve only played a handful of horror games as well, mainly things like Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem or Koudelka (remember that one?).

Anyhow, maybe one day I’ll change my mind about this. Check the game out. If it’s up your alley, play it, and then let me know your experience with it. Until then, I made my own version of it. Do you like femdom horror? I certainly hope so.

Only Silence

The party was still going and Jake was furious.
“This isn’t real!”
“So what?” Lana asked inside his mind.
“You lied! You promised we would be together then trapped me here!”
“You should have known better than to believe the dead.”
“I want my body back!”
“Keep dreaming, sweetie.”
Jake screamed but only silence replied.

I recently told you about The Haunting of Hill House and how I was enjoying that show. After I finished it, I continued down Mike Flanagan’s Netflix series and am now watching The Haunting of Bly Manor, which is inspired by the ghost stories of Henry James. Just like I was familiar with Shirley Jackson’s book in the case of Hil House, I’ve read The Turn of the Screw as well as the other tales that have been incorporated in this retelling and, just like before, I’m enjoying the way everything is playing out. It’s a different beast for sure, but the underlying creepiness of it all is top-notch. I’m two episodes away from the end and yes, before you ask, I’ll be watching Midnight Mass afterward.

Now, here’s a little tidbit of info about me. When I was younger and lived downtown, there was an official English bookstore not far from my place. One day, I decided to visit and basically fell down a rabbit hole of great literature because of it. That’s how I got to read Phillip K. Dick, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Rudyard Kipling, Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, Mary Shelley, Wilkie Collins, etc, in their native language. I bought many paperbacks there because they were cheaper than everywhere else, but the first I got was a volume of William James’ ghost stories. Funny how things go, huh?

Anyway, don’t trust dead people. They may just steal your body and control your mind. Possession is a major theme in James’ original novella, one that’s greatly expanded in the TV show with constant allusions to ‘keeping people tucked away in memories’ and trying to permanently inhabit another person’s body to get a second chance in life. While it’s still not a favorite subject of mine, it’s quite effective when used right, which is the case here. Go watch the show if you haven’t. It’s good.

Oh, one last thing. This wasn’t planned or anything, but there’s a funny contrast between yesterday’s piece and this one. Yesterday’s was about a haunted melody, i.e., sound, but here the real torment is the silence that follows the noise of memories Jake is trapped in. Which one would be worse for you?

Big Fan

“I’m so glad to meet you. I’m a big fan,” Harold said.
“How big?” Natasha smiled.
“I read all your hypnotic novels twenty times each.”
“Really? Then surely you absorbed all words and triggers, right?”
“Right…”
“Follow me, slave.”
Eyes glazed, Harold entered the trunk of her car. He’s been missing for six months now.

Do you know when people say stuff like “I’m your biggest fan” and whatnot? I always hated that as it’s incredibly cringy and most of the time, an obvious exaggeration that just makes any interaction feel awkward and forced. It’s something I would never say to anyone no matter how much I enjoyed their work, because it’s not in my nature. In fact, I’m quite reserved when it comes to my fandoms. I’m not saying people can’t be emotional and express their enthusiasm in visible ways, but a bit of restraint goes a long way in my book.

Anyhow, as I was musing about the dangers of extreme fandom today for a possible new writing project, this little snippet came to me and so I wrote it down. I’m guessing Harold never suspected he would become like a character in one of his idol’s books. As for what exactly happened to him in the last six months, I’ll leave that to your imagination.

Opening His Mind

“Fuck!” Marina exclaimed upon entering her sister’s house.
“What’s wrong?” Delilah asked.
“When you talked about opening Trevor’s mind, I thought you meant hypnosis, not cutting his brain open!”
“I did that, too. How do you think I got him quiet during the procedure?”
Fresh blood dripped on the carpet as he stared vacantly outside.

In the mood for something slightly horrific today. I guess. As for the reason why, there really isn’t one. I did have yet another busy Friday with a lot of things going on, and most of them coming out wrong, but I like horror-like pieces every single day, so…

I improvised a couple of ideas during my lunch break today. This was one of them. The expression “opening his mind” is used quite literally in this case. Then again, I can be quite literal myself. Please keep all bloody scalpels away from me, okay?
