Flash Fiction Friday 2023 – Week 40
Flash Fiction Friday continues in 2023. New pieces appear every Friday on my Patreon throughout the year. The minimum pledge to read them before anyone else is $3 per month. and the number of pieces available is tied to the monthly pledge total so the more you support my efforts, the more you’ll get to read. Find out what they’re all about and check out some excerpts from this week’s update in this post.
Exciting
Joshua sat in bed and lit a cigarette. Two years ago, his doctor would have told him that was a foolish move bound to get him in the grave sooner than he expected, but he couldn’t be more wrong. Smoking hadn’t ended his life, unlike vicious fangs.
The vampire attack on the eve of Halloween was as fierce as it was unexpected. He didn’t have time to react to the shadow that jumped him as he was entering his house, and he was already bleeding on the porch before even thinking of screaming. The predator was highly effective in its approach, benefiting from years of practice and its supernatural reflexes. No one would have stood a chance when faced with the same odds.
That should have been the end of him but fate wanted otherwise. Joshua was reborn as one of the children of the night and now he could smoke to his heart’s content without worrying about dying again. It’s not like his lungs worked, anyway.

Fame and Fortune
The ground shook beneath Hannah’s feet as her older sister continued to recite the ancient incantation. It was supposed to be a temporary tremor but it kept getting stronger and it didn’t seem like it was going to stop.
“I think you should close that book,” she said, her worried voice drowned by her sister’s ominous chanting.
Letitia ignored her. She had worked for too long to translate the old text after finding the tome buried in their grandmother’s property. The spell was a promise of fame and fortune she was not willing to let go of, no matter the consequences. Her voice rose higher and higher, stretching across the sea of gray clouds above them as lightning struck all around. It was a scene taken straight out of an apocalyptic movie yet she was completely unperturbed.
“Letitia, stop!” Hannah begged. She stood only a few inches away from the conflagration of power, unsure of what else to do to make her sibling see Reason.

Please Don’t Move
Hey, are you okay? Please don’t move. You were hit pretty hard by the shockwave. Here, tell me if you can feel this. No? How about if I touch here? You still don’t feel it? Shit! This is bad and it seems it’s all my fault. Please forgive me. I’m going to try to make things right.
Shh, don’t try to speak. Yes, that is Light you’re seeing shooting out of my hands. I’m a witch, okay? I was working on a new spell in my basement when the energy flow got unstable and got out of my control. I really didn’t mean for any of this to happen but it did so now I have to pick up the pieces before getting back to work. This bloody mess won’t happen again, I promise!
Please, be quiet! If you squirm, you’ll make me lose my concentration and you’ve already seen what happens when that’s the case. You need to trust me on this one. If I apply this to your wounds, then…
There, it’s already starting to take effect.

Wanda’s Party
Wanda’s annual Halloween party was as lively as ever. Everyone attending had put on their best costumes and they were having fun trying to guess what the others were wearing. Surprisingly, the host’s attire remained a mystery.
“Seriously, who are you supposed to be?” Jane, a.k.a. Slutty Wonder Woman asked.
“Guess,” Wanda replied with a wink.
“What do you think I’ve been trying to do for the last ten minutes?”
“Is it from an anime?” Bill joined the conversation with his orange suit and spiky Son Goku hair.
“No.”
“Are you sure? Because all that silver looks familiar. I’m sure I’ve seen that costume somewhere.”
“Perhaps you did, but not in an anime, that’s for sure!”
