Nothing Left To Lose…
John had long since given up any semblance of independence. His wife, Margaret, had stripped him of his autonomy, and he had allowed it to happen.
Every morning, he would awaken to the sound of Margaret’s shrill voice, commanding him to rise and prepare her breakfast. He would stumble out of bed, his limbs heavy and uncoordinated, and make his way to the kitchen. He would stand before the refrigerator, staring at its contents, unsure of what to do next. It was only when Margaret appeared in the doorway, a look of disgust on her face, that he would remember to take out the eggs and bacon.
As he cooked, he would listen to Margaret’s running commentary on his ineptitude. She would mock him for his clumsy movements, his inability to crack an egg without making a mess. The mistress smiled, her lips curling into a cruel sneer. “There you are, my little kitty,” she cooed. “Come to mama.”
