Hypnotic Cough
Paul couldn’t stop coughing.
“Fuck!” he exclaimed.
“That shit’s bad. You need some medicine,” Angelo said.
“That won’t do me any good. This is hypnotic cough.”
“Huh?”
“Erin’s punishment for cheating. I cough every time i think about it and she doesn’t let me stop.”
“Fuck!”
“That’s what I said…” Paul sighed and continued coughing.
How this story came to be
Oh, look! I finally caught up with this daily challenge and I’m no longer writing in the past. While I’m mostly recovered from my most recent battle with COVID, there’s one persistent symptom that’s still here, which is cough. It’s definitely not as strong and frequent now but it’s still here, and yes, it’s still annoying. That got me thinking: what if cough didn’t come from an illness but from an hypnotic suggestion? To make that idea work, I wrote this piece. I would hate a punishment like that. How about you?
