The morning sun was high in the sky, dappling the forest floor with patches of warm light. Leaves glistened with dew, their vibrating greens complementing the soft browns of moss-covered earth. Two fairies, each no larger than a ladybug, perched on a branch of an ancient oak, their iridescent wings shimmering like stained glass.

Nova, the bolder of the two, with hair spun from threads of distant starlight, leaned forward, her bright eyes wide with curiosity. “Look, Petal! A human! Do you think he’s lost?” Petal, who was more reserved, and adorned in blue hues reminiscent of a tranquil pond, followed Nova’s gaze to where a tall figure trudged through the underbrush.

The man in his forties was clad in rugged leather boots and a weathered cloak that flapped like a weary flag against the gentle breeze. He walked with poise and determination, as if he knew where he was going and how to get there, a fact Petal echoed to her friend.

“Nah! It’s clear he’s walked this path before,” she said. “Don’t do anything foolish, okay? The last thing I want to do is to deal with a human right now.”

“But I want to play! It’s been so long since we’ve had one of his kind around here. Are you coming or what?”

“Sorry, but no.”

“I’m going on my own, then!” Nova declared with a defiant flap of her wings, sending a cascade of shimmering dust spiraling into the air. Before Petal could muster another protest, she zipped away like a comet streaking across the sky, leaving only a fleeting whisper of laughter behind.

Petal sighed, a combination of worry and frustration swelling in her chest as she darted after her friend. She could see Nova’s bright form hovering near the human, who was now surveying the surroundings, oblivious to the magic fluttering just above his head. Despite herself, Petal found herself smiling for the thrill of adventure was hard to resist.

Nova smiled at her and made a sign only Petal could understand. The two fairies flew past the fearless hiker to find the perfect spot to lay their trap.

A few moments later, he heard the cry of two women straight ahead. “Help! My friend is stuck!” one said, the desperate plea echoing around him. He quickened his stride toward the sound, the leaves on the ground rustling as if the woods held its breath in anticipation.

As he pushed through the thick foliage, the cries became more high-pitched and desperate. He ran as fast as possible until the path took an abrupt left turn and he stumbled upon a cave entrance where a troubling scene was taking place.

He saw two women in their early twenties and a large boulder. One was bent low, her hands straining against the rock’s smooth surface, while the other kneeled beside her, eyes wide and pleading. “Please help! I can’t get her out!”

“Hold on!” he said, looking for something he could use as a lever.

He spotted a sturdy branch lying nearby, half-buried in a tangle of roots. Without hesitation, he seized it and felt the reassuring weight in his hands.

“Everything will be okay,” he declared. “Just a moment.”

He positioned the branch against the boulder, feeling the earth beneath his feet shift slightly as he pressed his shoulder into it. The boulder was heavier than it appeared, but adrenaline surged through him like wildfire. “On three!” he called out, trying to ignore the growing doubt that gnawed at his insides. “One… two… three!”

With a primal roar that seemed to come from the depths of his soul, he shoved with every ounce of strength he could muster. The boulder trembled and moved as loose pebbles skittered away like frightened mice. The woman trapped beneath it gasped, her face contorting in pain yet flickering with hope. He lifted it high enough for her friend to pull her out and, suddenly, everything was fine in the world again.

“Oh, thank you! Thank you so much!” cried the once-trapped woman as she stretched her arms to hug his legs. Strangely, she had next to no bruises at all and no broken bones, which rang an alarm in his mind.

“Thank you, kind sir!” the other woman said. “It’s a relief to see someone else on this trail, today. What’s your name?”

“Devon,” he replied, shaking her hand.

“Nice to meet you, Devon. I’m Petal, and this is my sister Nova. Before you ask, our parents are hippies at heart,” she chuckled. “I don’t know what we would have done without you.”

“You girls seem fine,” he muttered, glancing at Nova’s legs. Something was off about these two and the confirmation came right after when he noticed something impossible – They had no shadows, despite the sun shining above them.

“Oh!” Nova said as she stood up and followed his gaze to the unsettling revelation. “He’s on to us already!”

Petal shook her head and cursed herself for the misguided plan. They had used this tactic before to mess with other hikers and nature lovers, but they had never compromised their disguise so quickly. Nova rolled her eyes but remained as enthusiastic as ever, for he had already introduced himself, and names have power.

“What are you?” Devon held the branch between his fingers as if mimicking one of the Ninja Turtles and assumed a defensive position.

“Your owners for the day,” Nova giggled as she blew him a kiss, laced with specks of gold and silver dust. They flew into his eyes, nose, and mouth, making him gasp as a sudden wave of dizziness clouded his senses. “I’m sorry, Devon, but I’m feeling naughty today. You will obey us.”

He stumbled back, feeling the earth slip away beneath him. The world twisted and turned, the trees bending unnaturally, their trunks spiraling like candy canes. Devon began shaking, and his thoughts flickered like a candle flame caught in a tempest. Nova’s laughter pierced his ears, and her magic wrapped around his mind. His knees buckled, and he crumpled to the ground.

For a fleeting moment, clarity washed over him. The illusion shattered like glass, revealing the true nature of the supernatural creatures before him. Petal crossed her tiny arms and said,

“Congratulations, you’ve got your toy. Now what?”

“I don’t know. I’m making this up as we go along, but doesn’t he have a tight, fuckable ass?” Nova circled the mesmerized man who was now kneeling like a devout worshiper, staring into the void of his thoughts.

Petal agreed and took the branch out of his callous hands. As much as she hated to admit it, humans made good pets. There were more uses for that item than just an improvised lever and they were going to find them all.
