Kimberly sat in the corner of her favorite cafe. The air smelled of roasted coffee beans and pastries fresh from the oven. A faint chime rang as the front door swung open, and she looked up from her cup of chamomile, the steam curling like a delicate wisp toward the ceiling. It was a warm autumn afternoon, and golden leaves danced in the streets.
When her eyes fell upon Mary, a wave of nostalgia washed over her. Mary’s radiant smile was unchanged, but there was something different about her, a bustling excitement that hadn’t been there before. Kimberly’s heart fluttered with curiosity as she motioned for Mary to join her at the snug little table by the window.
“Long time no see!” Kimberly exclaimed, setting her cup down and leaning forward. “Receiving your message got me by surprise! What’s going on?”
Mary settled into the chair across from Kimberly, her gaze sweeping the cafe before locking onto her friend’s eyes. “I know, right?” she said with a laugh that lit up the cozy space. “It feels like ages since we’ve had coffee together.”
“Too long!” Kimberly agreed, her fingers drumming on the table. “Tell me everything! How’s life treating you? I saw your post about that art show you’re curating… Congratulations!”
Mary straightened in her seat, her cheeks flushing with pride. “Thanks! It was a whirlwind, honestly. I never thought organizing something like that could be so… intense. But it turned out great! The energy in the room was just electric. People were fighting over the pieces!” She chuckled, reliving the thrill of it all. “But enough about me. What’s new with you?”
Kimberly smiled, grateful for the momentary distraction from her worries. “Oh, you know… work is crazy as usual, but I’m getting a promotion after six years of grinding, so there’s that.”
“Does it come with more responsibilities and more money or just the former?”
“Both. I wouldn’t accept a shitty deal even if they were stupid enough to offer it.”
“I’m glad for you and I hope you make the best of it if that’s what you want.”
“It is, thanks. Now, why don’t you tell me the real reason you asked to meet me here?”
“What do you mean?”
“I know you, Mary. You’re always waiting for other people to reach out first instead of taking the initiative. You would have never done it unless something big was going on… so what is it?”
Mary raised an eyebrow, her confidence more visible than ever, and said,
“You’ll be receiving the invitation in the mail before the end of the month but I wanted to tell you in person. I’m getting married, Kim!”
Kimberly’s heart skipped a beat, the warmth of the cafe dimming for a moment as her mind raced to catch up with the words. “Married?” she echoed, disbelief mingling with her excitement. The vibrations of the bustling cafe faded into a soft hum, and all she could focus on was Mary’s beaming face.
“Yes! Amazing, isn’t it? I’m getting married!” Mary’s grin was infectious, her eyes sparkling like stars against an indigo sky. Her hands danced in the air as if trying to capture the joy swirling around them.
Kimberly leaned back in her chair. “This is incredible! But wait… Who’s the groom?” Her voice rose with curiosity, visions of extravagant floral arrangements and a sparkling wedding dress cascading through her mind.
Mary’s laughter bubbled as she replied,
“Tom. After all these years, I’m marrying the man of my dreams.”
Kimberly was confused, and she felt as if she had tumbled down the rabbit hole straight into Alice’s Wonderland. Tom? The same Tom who’d been her high school crush? The one she had stalked during college? The man who had filed a restraining order on her to keep her from getting closer to him and his family? Her mind reeled not only at the news of the engagement but also at the thought that Mary had somehow won him over.
“Tom? I mean, I remember how crazy you were about him and all the problems that followed, but I didn’t think… How did this even happen?”
“I ran into him a couple of months back and all the drama and misunderstandings cleared up. We started reconnecting and it just… clicked, you know?”
Kimberly couldn’t help but furrow her brow. “I’m sorry, but that’s hard to believe. There was a lot of bad blood between you. Things don’t just get resolved like that, so what did happened?”
Mary’s laughter faded, her expression shifting, as if a cloud had passed over the sun. “Okay, fine!” she replied, waving a hand as though swatting away an annoying fly. Her tone carried an edge—the kind that sparked curiosity more than it quelled it. “I’ve been hypnotizing him since that day, brainwashing him to want whatever I want. He doesn’t know what’s going on and he never will, but I promise we’re going to be very happy together.”
“You’re joking, right? Because if not, that’s insane!”
“Oh, it’s no joke. It’s happening, and it’s the best thing ever! This is why I wanted to tell you in person. I need you to process this information so you don’t try to ruin my special day.”
Kimberly felt a chill creep down her spine, the warmth in her chest replaced by an icy grip of disbelief. “Ruin your day? Mary, this isn’t just some casual announcement; it’s… it’s disturbing! You can’t do this!”
“Can’t I?” Mary leaned forward, a sly smile on her lips. “It’s not as far-fetched as it seems. Sometimes, people just need a little nudge in the right direction, don’t you think? I’m giving him a wonderful future with me in his life.”
The cafe around them seemed to dim further, the vibrant chatter of other patrons fading into an indistinct background hum. Kimberly’s palms grew clammy against the table’s cool surface. “But what about his free will? How can you be okay with…?”
Mary cut her off with a swift wave of her hand, her expression hardening even more. “You worry too much, Kim. He’s happy! He’s always happy when he’s with me now. I want you at my wedding but if you try to interfere, I swear…”
“What?”
“You’re next, my dear,” Mary declared, and she wasn’t bluffing. I love you, but you’ve always been somewhat uptight. However, if I loosen you up… Think about it, okay?”
With that, Mary left, her threat hanging in the air. Still shaking, Kimberly asked for the check, knowing that her life would never be the same after that day.
