One Hundred Years
“Congratulations on getting One Hundred Years of Solitude published, Mr. Márquez. It’s wonderful.” The time-traveling hypnotist said.
“Thank you, Miss.”
“However, the sequel will be far better.”
“What sequel?”
“One Hundred Years of Service to a Mesmerizing Woman.”
“I don’t think that’s possible. “
“Anything is possible when I’m around.”
The story began that night.
On May 5, 1967, Gabriel Garcia Márquez’s Cien años de Soledad, or One Hundred Years of Solitude, was first published. This book, often referred to as a defining work of Latin American literature, made Márquez a prime candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature, which he eventually got in 1982. Knowing the fact, I had to play a bit with it and Horatia is definitely the girl for it.
It’s one of my favorite books especially due to its magical realism. Bizarre things happen all the time that are dismissed as absolutely ordinary creating a dreamy sensation through and through. It’s almost like going into trance. If you haven’t read it, you should definitely do so and then let me know your thoughts.
A Good Slave
Crimson blood splattered the wall as her blade swirled.
“Just a scratch, nothing more…” The ninja muttered. “You die tonight.”
“You first…” The sorceress replied. “Feeling the effects already?”
Shadows covered his eyes. The world teetered by the abyss.
“Poison…?” He gasped, knees buckling.
“Enchantment.” She grinned. “You’ll be a good slave.”
He nodded, mindlessly.
Add another impromptu to the list. Don’t really know where this one came from. I just sat down and wrote it. Anyway, we all love ninjas and evil sorceresses, right? Yeah, I think we do.
Open World
Everywhere he looked, the landscape was the same. Sand. Leaden Skies. Nothingness.
Devon limped forward, feet burning. The game had been going on for ages.
Exhausted, he stopped. As he did, trees phased in. An oasis! Better yet, a quest marker.
A woman smiled, magic scroll in hand.
Mission: to be enslaved.
He kept playing.
Do you like open-world games? I’m somewhat a reluctant fan when it comes to them and by that I mean I tend to prefer more linear experiences because they’re more focused but, at the same time, many recent games I enjoyed were somewhat open so…
Big worlds can be enticing. The problem is when they become too big and then you start seeing the same basic foundations repeated ad aeternum. When objectives become too samey and even the environments, fatigue creeps in, and it stops being fun. This is why when something new comes along, excitement is heightened once again.
I wrote this one with that in mind. Imagine playing a game for so long that everything becomes dull. Suddenly, the next big thing pops up and you’re so eager to get into it that it doesn’t matter what it is. So what if you lose your mind and become a slave forever? Wouldn’t you like that?
Flirting
Bruce Wayne smiled when the beautiful brunette approached him.
“Saw you staring, boy… What drew you in? My eyes? My legs? My ass?”
“Your necklace…” He pointed at the ruby heart around her neck. “Quite enticing.”
“You’re one of those, huh?” She wet her lips. “A drink for your mind then.”
He bought the bar.
Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. Batman, enjoys the role of playboy, right? Given he’s loaded and all, it’s easy for him to “fix” everything with money. While comics aren’t really my thing, this little thing came to me, today. I envisioned him as not being just a playboy but also a closeted hypnoslave hoping for some fun and…
