Meteor Shower
Colonel Patterson averted his gaze as he walked past the quarantine corridor and heard the unnatural growls of all the men and women he once knew. Trying his best to maintain the composure befitting of a man of his rank, he entered the lab and asked:
“Do you have any good news for me, Dr. Black?”
Alyssa Black, the only woman alive to have received four major Virology awards before the age of twenty-five, looked at him from behind her rimless titanium glasses and nodded.
“We’ve been studying the compound found at the impact site trying to reverse the effects of the neurotoxin and so far, the results have been promising…”
“But?” The Colonel intervened. “There’s always a ‘but’, Dr. so cut to the chase, please.”
“But there’s another meteor shower tonight,” she replied, handing him a copy of the latest satellite images. “If you don’t believe in God, now might be a good time to start.”
The Colonel closed his eyes and began to pray.
