Unfinished Business
“Home at last!” Nathan exclaimed. He opened the front door, turned on the lights, and…
… froze when he saw Olivia’s ghost in her bloody white dress.
“Why are you here?” he gasped.
“Remember when you hypnotized me and killed me while entranced?” she replied. “My turn.”
He screamed as her eyes turned into black spirals.
Another spooky piece for Halloween. Who doesn’t love a ghost story? I know I do. I wrote three or four snippets involving such supernatural apparitions during my lunch break today and selected the one I enjoyed the most to be today’s challenge entry. It’s the darkest of the bunch but you can handle a bit of darkness, can’t you? Tomorrow’s piece will be on the light side of things and most likely not Halloween-related.
About Perfection
“… wake up, Jim.” his Poetry teacher said.
“Huh?” the sophomore blinked, suddenly remembering where he was.
“Welcome back,”
“Was I asleep?” he struggled to focus his thoughts.
“Entranced.”
“Why do you say that?”
“Your poem about perfection,” she handed him a sheet of paper with her name handwritten a thousand times. “Well done.”
Jim blushed.
I did say yesterday that today’s piece wouldn’t be Halloween-focused and I like to keep my promises, so I decided to write about writing which is something I always like doing. Sometimes, the most perfect things are the simplest ones and that’s true even when it comes to hypnotic trances. This came to me on my way home from work today. Tomorrow, we’ll go back to spooky themes.
Complete Darkness
Garrett stood by the generator, hoping it would kickstart again.
“Hurry!” he muttered. Only thirty seconds had passed since his building had fallen into darkness but that was enough to draw the revenants.
Red eyes glimmered all around and he saw the mangled face of his ex-wife. She had returned for his blood and mind.
So… when I said yesterday we would be returning to spooky themes today, I was far from imagining what would happen about twenty minutes after posting the challenge entry. There was a blackout on my street. Everything was fine and, suddenly, nothing but complete darkness in the house and outside. I don’t usually scare easily but, right at the same time, I saw a pair of glowing eyes on my bedroom window – which happened to belong to a stray cat passing by but at the time I didn’t notice that. – and my heart jumped. The light returned after half an hour and there were no more strange incidents afterward but the whole ordeal did give me the idea for this one.
I’m still not afraid of the dark by the way. I hope the same goes for you.
Can You Believe…?
Angela handed Joan another slice of cake. It had the same narcotic taste as the others.
“Can you believe it’s been ten years since we got married?”
“No.”
“Oh? What’s bothering you, sweetie?”
“Didn’t we meet last week?”
“Don’t be ridiculous!”
The real answer was the night before but Joan didn’t have to know that.
I baked a cake today, similar to the one in the featured image above. It’s something I do on occasion. While I’m far from being the greatest cook in the world, I manage. This idea came to me as I was getting it ready because I honestly don’t remember the last time I made a chocolate cake. I suppose I could have written just about anything but this was it and now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to have a slice.
