“Try again?” The black screen said.
“Yes,” Julian muttered. The arcade replica cabinet was exactly like he remembered from his childhood days. Well, almost. There were new animations, the music between the levels was different, and was that an image of a purple-eyed woman randomly flashing in the background? With no need for quarters, he kept playing and the more he did so the more his thoughts waned.
Hours passed, and memories faded away. He conquered the last stage, but it was too late. Kneeling by the sticks, Julian’s blank gaze failed to register the last words that appeared before him:
“Subject’s programming complete. Starting Extraction Protocol.”
