Captain Ivy Thomas opened her eyes, the dim lights of the Cryosleep chamber flickering to life around her.
The first thing she noticed was the piercing sound of an alarm blaring through the ship and cutting through the fog of slumber that clouded her mind. With a groan, she pushed herself upright, her muscles protesting the sudden movement after what felt like an eternity of stillness. She hated being locked inside one of those crystalline pods, but it was either that or staying awake for three and a half years surrounded by nothing but the darkness of space outside, and she’d rather not go insane.
As her senses sharpened, she realized that something was wrong. The other sleeping pods in the chamber were wide open, their occupants nowhere to be seen. What was going on?
“Okay, this doesn’t seem good,” she thought, panic clawing at the edges of her mind. She took a deep breath and forced it back down by remembering her years of training. The first thing she needed to do was to assess the situation and only then look for the proper response.(…)
