A small excerpt is available below:
A powerful beam of white light illuminated the cavernous shaft that kept on spiraling downwards as if wanting to drag anyone foolish enough to venture through it straight into the bowels of Hell. Deborah Wilcox led the way, accompanied by the esteemed Oxford Professor Heidi Summers, and young Parisian thief Noémie Beaufort. They had been walking underground for almost an hour, and the old scholar was getting annoyed.
“Are you sure we’re in the right place?” she asked as she stopped to take a breather.
“For the thousandth time, yes, I’m sure!” Deborah replied, giving him the side eye. “We’re almost there.”
She had seen it and had no reason to doubt her visions even though they weren’t always clear. The three women were hunting for another Sussurri, a magical stone with forbidden powers also known as a Whisperer. After retrieving the third piece five weeks prior, Deborah had a glimpse of the location of the remaining two in the set. After crossing that mental information with European geographical data, Deborah had concluded that one stone was somewhere along the border between Italy and Switzerland, in an underground temple lost from sight and memory thousands of years ago. Finding the precise spot on the map to travel to hadn’t been easy, but she was convinced her efforts were about to pay off. The Whisperer around her neck was growing heavier as it resonated with the nearby power source. “Just a few more minutes,” she thought.
The path ahead narrowed without warning, forcing the trio to walk in a single file. The air grew thick with moisture, making every breath a laborious task. Professor Summers coughed as the musty scent filled her nostrils, and Noémie wiped the sweat from her brow, her steps becoming more uncertain as the walls pressed closer on either side.
Deborah forged ahead, her determination unwavering despite the increasing difficulty of their journey. The beam of light from her explorer’s helmet quivered as if struggling to pierce through the heavy atmosphere surrounding them. The deeper they went the more they struggled. The stone floor beneath their feet was getting uneven and slippery, causing them to stumble and slide with each precarious step.
“This is getting too dangerous, especially for her,” Noémie said, helping the older woman stay on her feet. “We should go back while we still can and come back with more people and better equipment.”(…)
