The gymnasium of Crestwood High had been metamorphosed into a dazzling spectacle. Strings of twinkling fairy lights draped from the rafters like constellations captured in glass, and tables adorned with delicate centerpieces of lilacs and soft pinks stood sentinel against the polished wooden floor. A low murmur filled the air, punctuated by bursts of laughter and the clinking of glasses, but for Hannah Thompson, the atmosphere felt stifling rather than celebratory.
She stood at the edge of the room, her back pressed against the cool wall, clutching a sparkling mocktail, its effervescence mirroring her bubbling anxiety. It was just a drink, she reminded herself, but it was also heavier than any weight she had ever carried. The past ten years unfurled in her mind like an old film reel: scenes of awkward adolescence, fleeting friendships, and heartbreaks that had yet to fade. She had imagined this moment countless times since graduation: glamorous reconnections with old friends, laughter spilling like confetti, and the sweet taste of nostalgia. Instead, Hannah found herself trapped in a swirl of memories she wished to leave behind.
As the crowd swayed to the live band’s rendition of an upbeat tune from their high school days, she watched as groups formed around her, cliques that had never disbanded. The cheerleaders, still radiant in their coordinated outfits, giggled over shared secrets while the jocks playfully shoved one another as if no time had passed. Hannah’s heart sank at the sight; they all seemed so perfect, their lives wrapped in bow ties of achievement and happiness. It was like she was a ghost among them, invisible and untouched by the magic that bound them together.
Taking a deep breath, she ventured further into the gymnasium, her heels clicking against the floor as if announcing her presence to those who noticed. She caught sight of Jessica Hartley, the reigning queen bee of their class, commanding attention as she regaled a gaggle of admirers with tales of her high-flying modeling career in New York City. The glimmering sequins on Jessica’s dress sparkled like stars against the backdrop of Hannah’s crepuscular mood.
