“What’s this?” Megan asked as she unearthed the small, gift-wrapped box from inside the bottom drawer of her nightstand.
“It’s nothing,” her girlfriend Samantha said, trying to deflect, but Megan wasn’t convinced. She turned the box over in her hands, feeling the soft crinkle of the cream-colored wrapping paper beneath her fingers. It was tied with a delicate ribbon, a shade of lavender that reminded her of the wildflowers they’d picked during their last hike together. A swirl of curiosity and anticipation brewed within her, making her heart race just a little faster.
Megan glanced up at Samantha, who stood biting her lip, a familiar nervous gesture that always gave away her emotions. The playfulness in her eyes had dimmed, replaced by an enigmatic cloud that hung between them like a secret waiting to be unveiled. “Come on, Sam,” she pressed with a smile, “you can’t just hide something like this from me. Is this my Christmas present?”
“What if it is?” Samantha crossed her arms. “We’re still three weeks away from Christmas, so pretend you didn’t see a thing and put it back, okay?”
“I can’t do that. If you didn’t want me to find it, you should have picked a better hiding spot. Now, you need to get me something else. Those are the rules.” Megan pulled at the ribbon.
“Since when?”
“Since I said so,” Megan chuckled.
“You’re ruining the surprise!” Samantha blurted out.
“Sorry, babe. I’ll make it up to you some time.”(…)
