Subtle Gesture
Will looked at the knife in Marisa’s hand.
“What are you going to do with that?” he asked.
“Guess,” she replied
“Please don’t cut me.”
“Relax, this blade is special. You won’t feel a thing.”
With a subtle gesture, she pierced his mind and he kneeled, eager to serve.
“Who’s The Authority now?” she smirked.
How this story came to be
I mentioned a few days ago that I’m currently watching a couple of shows on HBO Max. I watch an episode of one every day after taking care of dinner and my pets. One such show is His Dark Materials, which is an adaptation of the trilogy of books authored by Philip Pullman. The second season covers the events of the second book – The Subtle Knife – and this piece was inspired by it.
If you’re not familiar with the books or the show, the subtle knife is a mystical artifact that can cut anything from flesh to windows to parallel worlds. The knife in this piece is similar in a way but it slices people’s minds instead, enslaving them. The names of the main character also draw from the book with Will being the bearer of the knife, and Marisa being Mrs. Coulter, one of the antagonists of the trilogy, and the mother of the main character Lyra Belacqua.
Lastly, we have a reference to The Authority, which is basically God in the multiverse and a power our heroes are trying to stop. In my piece, it symbolizes the supremacy of women because this is a femdom challenge after all.
