A humorous piece of supernatural flash fiction for day 10 of this Halloween event. Please enjoy.

Family Secret

The clock was about to strike eight and Jonathan was already rubbing his hands. A bet was a bet and there’s no way he was going to lose.

“She’s not going to make it in time.” He declared. “I hope you enjoy doing the dishes for the rest of the year.”

“That’s not going to happen.” His wife, Sandra, replied. “My mother has never been late for a Halloween dinner. She’s not going to start, today.”

“Honey, deadline is ten seconds from now. Of course, she will! Three, two…”

Before he could reach one, the matriarch of the O’Connell clan materialized on her seat in a puff of smoke, much to his confusion.

“What the…? How…? Sandra, how did she do that?”

“You haven’t told him yet, hun?” The elder addressed her daughter, a mischievous smile on her lips.

“Nope but I guess now I don’t have a choice…” Sandra sighed. “Thanks for that, Mom!”

“Sorry… too much traffic out there to do it the normal way. Your hubby is a big boy. Surely he can handle it…”

“Handle what?” Jonathan muttered. He was still trying to process the impossible and couldn’t stop blinking.

“I think it’s time for you to finally learn my family’s history… won’t you take a seat?”

“Can I stand?” He trembled.

“I insist.” Sandra snapped her fingers and called for a chair. When the wooden seat came running to him like a dog in need of a good petting, his eyes rolled over and he collapsed on the floor.

“Just like your father…” The older witch mused. “It’s going to be a fun night.”

Sandra sat next to her mother and waited for him to wake up.
